The opening ceremony of GSA Agency´s headquarters was attended by VIPs in space activities & satellite navigation

The opening ceremony of GSA Agency´s headquarters was attended by VIPs in space activities & satellite navigation The Headquarters of the European Global Navigation Satellite System GNSS (GSA) has moved to Prague. The opening ceremony took place on 6th September 2012, with the participation of VIPs in space activities & satellite navigation and many other distinguished guests. Program and the subsequent press conference was also attended by Czech Minister of Transport Pavel Dobeš, Vice President of European Commission for Industry and Entrepreneurship Antonio Tajani, GSA Executive Director Carlo des Dorides and GSA Management Board President Sabine Dannelke.

The GSA headquarters moved from Brussels to Prague by the decision adopted on intergovernmental conference of EU Member states on 10th December 2010. Subsequentionally, the host agreement was negotiated between the Czech Republic and the GSA, which entered into force on 9th of August 2012. Czech Minister of transport Pavel Dobeš said: „The opening of the administrative headquarters of the European navigation system Galileo in Prague is an important event. Not only for the prestige of the Czech Republic within the EU, but also in terms of positive economical impact resulting from the Agency´s activities in the Czech Republic.“.

"This ceremonial opening represents a new important chapter for the European GNSS program," said Carlo des Dorides, Executive Director of the GSA and further said that "Opening the headquarters in Prague is the first success of the agency. Another task that stands before the agency is taking responsibility for the governance of the EGNOS and Galileo in January 2014 to 2016. "

The aim of the Czech Ministry of Transport is to use huge economic, strategic and security potential of space activities and areas of applications and services related to utilization of space systems, to ensure maximum returns on investment of the Czech Republic in this area and enhance the technological innovation and the quality of Czech industry on the European and global market.

The Ribbon cutting ceremony at the new headquarters of GSA is the next step as the confirmation, that the Czech Republic belongs to the states, that perceive the space industry as a great opportunity for the growth of the national economy and its competitiveness. Minister Pavel Dobeš said: "I firmly believe that the involvement of the Czech Republic into space activities contribute to the greater success of Czech subjects in the international competitive environment,".

The overall responsibility for the management and financing of the Galileo and EGNOS (European Geostationary Navigation Overlay Service) lies on the European Commission. Technical implementation was entrusted to the European Space Agency (ESA). For the period 2014/2015, it´s planned to have eighteen Galileo´s satellites operational (30 planned satellites in overal) according to the timetable, so the Galileo program will be able to provide first three services (Open service, Public Regulated Service and Search and Rescue Service.

The term of full commissioning  of Galileo has been set for the period 2019/2020, when all planned navigation services will be available. Other GSA tasks include security programmes and services, system certification and issues related to marketing and commercialization.

The accompanying music program at the inauguration of the GSA Agency's headquarters in Prague aptly provides music band called Magnetik, which stands for musical visionaries Moimir Papalescu and Peter Van Krbetz. This futuristic music was inspired by Kraftwerk and Neuand, visions of AC Clark and space trips of Gagarin and Armstrong.
