A revolution in small satellite engines is being prepared in the Czech Republic

SpaceLab EU and the Czech Aerospace Research Centre (VZLU) have entered into a partnership under which they will, over the next five years, work together to develop and commercialize a unique air-breathing ion propulsion engine that allows satellites to maintain their position on a very low orbit. The engine thrust is created by accelerating the residual atmosphere of the Earth and no longer needs any other fuel. In addition to the 40th anniversary of the first spaceflight of Czechoslovak – and first non-American and non-Soviet – astronaut Vladimír Remek, the anniversaries of several other significant events of the “space age” in which Czechs were involved will be observed in 2018. In October, 40 years will have passed since the launch of the first Czech satellite, Magion 1. A number of space-themed events for the general and expert public will take place throughout the year, culminating in autumn with a celebration of the anniversary of the Czech Republic’s entry into the European Space Agency.
